The trains can travel from one end to the other in 14 minutes, reaching top speeds of 50 mph. The Las Vegas system is one of 10 multi-station monorails in the United States, according to the Monorail Society, a nonprofit organization that promotes the high-tech trains as an efficient and clean form of transportation.

The route's eastern view offers disappointing glimpses of low-rent apartments, parking lots and construction sites. To the west, the scenery improves. When travelers near the hub station at the convention center, there's a sweeping view of casino developer Steve Wynn's new megaresort.

K.C. Dehning, 44, a pastor from Warsaw, Indiana, said the $10 he paid to use the monorail all day was a deal compared the money he would have spent on cabs.

"If you want to get from one place to another, it's going to be a whole lot easier," he said.

The new Las Vegas Monorail is open for business. The $650 million transit system is state-of-the-art, and provides an exhilarating, economical means of transportation along the Las Vegas Strip.

Price: $3 - $25
Hours: 8:00 AM - 12:00 midnight

The monorail is touted as the most technologically advanced public transportation system in the world. It links eight major Las Vegas resorts and nine convention facilities, including the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Las Vegas Monorail is another unique attraction for Sin City.

The monorail system connects the MGM Grand and Sahara hotels on a route running east of, and parallel to, the Las Vegas Strip. The monorail reaches speeds up to 50 miles per hour, covering the four-mile route in approximately 14 minutes.

Fares & Passes

The fare for a one-way trip on the Las Vegas Monorail is $3, with round-trip fare costing $5.50. The monorail runs from 8:00 AM - 12:00 midnight, 365 days a year.

Five passes are available. The passes are one ride (one entrance, one exit), two ride (two entrances), 10 ride (10 entrances), one day (unlimited access for a 24-hour period), and three day passes (unlimited use for 72 hours).

For the first three months of the monorail's operation, special introductory prices will be $3 (one ride), $5.50 (two ride), $20 (10 ride), $10 (one day), and $25 (three day). After three months, the costs will be $3 (one ride), $5.75 (two ride), $25 (10 ride), $15 (one day), and $40 (three day). Tickets may be purchased at ticket vending machines located inside each monorail station and the adjoining station properties.

Future plans for the monorail include connecting downtown Las Vegas and McCarran International Airport.
