The first step is to enter. In the old days you had to lick a stamp and complete a lot of paperwork. These days most of the contests are online and just require a few clicks to enter. The only tradeoff is that you may receive marketing material and offers, but those are things you might want anyways. Contest providers must also state the rules and you can always optout later if you don’t want to get their marketing material.

Don’t Get Scammed
Only enter contests from trusted official sources. These should be from places you know, like the actual hotel website, airline, or well known product websites. You should never have to pay any money to enter. If they ask for your credit card or an “entry fee,” it is most likely a scam.
