ONLINE BOOKING SECRETS
TO SAVE YOU MONEY.

Booking a hotel in Las Vegas is a lot like playing roulette. You really never know what hotel rate you will get from one day to the next. It can even change from one minute to the next. Below are our top 5 booking secrets to get the best rates.

1.) When booking online, always check rates from the hotel information page and the general search main page.

When you do a search from the main page of a website, they figure you will settle for almost any hotel, even though you may be looking for a specific one. When this happens, they try to push hotels that are not selling as well and may even remove the hotel you wanted from their search results. When you do a search from the specific hotel information page, you are telling them that you want the hotel. Doing a hotel specific search will give you the best chance of having it available.

You should still check rates from the main page, since if the hotel you happen to want is the one they are trying to push, you may get a lower rate from a general search. If you already did a search from the hotel-specific page, make sure to close your browser and then clear your browser’s cookies so they can’t trace your actions. Then go back to the website and check rates from their general search page.

2.) Clear your browser’s cookies before checking rates. Visit many other discount sites.

Reservation sites remember your browsing history. If they see you were at site A and know the rate that the site offers hotels, you may just get a $1 discount instead of a much lower discount had they not known where you came from before the search. You can clear your browsing history by erasing all your browser cookies. On the flip side, you can also try visiting a bunch of discount sites first to see if it makes a difference in the rate. In some cases it can drop the price a lot if the booking company knows you came from their biggest competitors.

3.) Check back again later on the same site.

If a website sees you coming back again, they feel you are close to making a sale and will often drop the rates lower than when you first came to see them. You may even get a “come back” pop-up with a discounted rate if you book with them. These can be significant savings. If you see a good rate, close your browser window and come back a few minutes later. In this case, make sure you don’t clear your browser cookies, since that is how they will remember you.

4.) Check rates several different times during the day/night.

If a reservation company is not booking many hotels, they may drop the rates before the company closes in preparation for the next day’s sale. The problem is you don’t really know when the discount will happen. If you check back every few hours, including very late (near midnight), you will be one of the first to grab a bargain rate.

5.) Make use of price guarantees and be sure to look at the entire total with tax and fees.

Many online booking sites, including the hotel websites, offer a guarantee that they have the lowest rates. This can be a very good deal. However, the guarantee rarely includes taxes and fees. You need to look at the final total to see if the “price match” would really save you money. You may see a lower daily rate on another site and get the price guarantee only to find that they have a lot more taxes and fees that make the final total higher.

The Wall Street Journal Online
By Scott McCartney

Web Sites Offer New Features To Help Users Time Purchases To Get a Better Travel Deal

When the price of an airline ticket can change several times a day, it’s hard to feel secure about locking in the lowest fare. But several Web sites are adding features intended to help you feel confident about the price you’re paying.

FareCompare.com offers historical prices for trips in 77,000 markets in the U.S. and Canada — data that haven’t been available before to consumers. Farecast.com goes a step further, using sophisticated data-mining techniques to predict whether prices for a particular trip are likely to go up or down over the next week. Kayak.com now has a feature called Buzz that shows the best prices found by other Kayak users on the most searched destinations over the past 48 hours.

Airlines monkey around with ticket prices as much as three times a day for domestic itineraries and prices can change on international trips as often as five times a day. What’s more, fares on a particular flight can change quickly — up or down — as seats sell or remain empty. A lack of sales can prompt airline computers to offer more seats at a lower price.

“You need to know what a decent price is,” says Rick Seaney, chief executive and president of FareCompare. “Consumers should be more educated about purchases.”

Booking air travel is increasingly a self-service business, with airline Web sites taking a bigger share of bookings and growing even faster than online agencies such as Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz. They all provide lots of prices, but little historical context. In a way, sites like FareCompare, Farecast and Kayak perform the functions of a good travel agent, who would often track pricing changes and know how to spot deals. Since the Internet has turned many consumers into their own travel agents, the new online tools can help them make better buying decisions.

FareCompare shows the lowest prices offered by month for the next 11 months in any U.S. market, and offers a “Fare Trend” graph showing whether the lowest prices have been increasing, decreasing or holding steady. You can quickly see whether prices in that market bounce around or stay consistent. And with the current prices, FareCompare offers a one-star to four-star rating of how good the offering is compared with past prices. (see below for a sample prediction of how airfares will change for Aug 11, 2006-Aug 14, 2006).

The lowest price available for a round-trip ticket in September between Boston and Miami, for example, was priced yesterday by FareCompare at $198 (not including taxes). That’s expensive compared with last year, when the lowest price available for September 2005 was $158. But prices were higher in April, May and June, according to FareCompare. The Web site showed American dropped its lowest price on that route by $80 two weeks ago.

With FareCompare, it takes a few clicks to get available prices on specific dates since the site first offers lowest price in a month, then prices broken down by week. Drill a bit deeper, and you can break down prices by airline on the same route. While Delta Air Lines has consistently charged about $400 for its lowest advance-purchase round trip between Atlanta and Cincinnati over the past three months, prices at Continental Airlines yo-yoed in that market between $100 and $400 in the same period, according to FareCompare. Delta offers nonstop service between its two biggest hubs; Continental offers only connecting flights.

FareCompare, a Dallas company that started doing sophisticated travel data-crunching for businesses then decided to add a consumer site, has accumulated 22 months of prices. The site also tracks first-class and business-class fares, and is a quick way to find “Y-Up” fares — coach tickets that get you automatic first-class upgrades.

You can’t book tickets at FareCompare, Farecast, Kayak and other such referral sites such as SideStep. One click will send you to an airline Web site or other vendor for booking.

Farecast.com grew out of a University of Washington professor’s research into whether air fares were rational, meaning could they be predicted with data-mining computing that looks at historical patterns and recent changes. It’s like forecasting the weather. While far from perfect, Farecast believes it can make accurate forecasts.

Farecast spent three years developing its system, which crunches huge amounts of data including indicators of airline inventory, pricing history and consumer demand. Farecast doesn’t replicate the “yield management” systems that airplanes run, which try to maximize revenue generated by each airline seat. Instead, Farecast evaluates price movements over time — what happened to the actual prices airlines posted.

“We’ve identified over 100 indicators of what air fares will do, some intuitive and some not so obvious,” says Chief Executive Hugh Crean.

So far, Farecast is running only in a public “beta” test mode, with about 120 markets into or out of either Seattle or Boston. By year end, the Seattle-based company says it will be running with all domestic markets available. Farecast breaks fares down by airlines, as well as by time of day.

Farecast takes into account special events like a convention or graduation, seasonal travel patterns, and both pricing and inventory trends. It doesn’t factor in external pressures like the price of fuel, which has forced airlines to trim flight schedules and raise ticket prices. But it does pick up those trends from the price and inventory changes.

Farecast won’t be able to forecast events like the entry of a low-cost carrier into markets, or retaliatory pricing wars between airlines when one carrier dumps cheap prices into a market trying to punish a competitor, or at least voice displeasure with a sale somewhere else. Mr. Crean notes those are the exceptions and that most pricing is surprisingly rational.

Still, Mr. Seaney of FareCompare says his company has tried data-mining and predictive techniques, and found airfares were difficult to predict. “A lot of times it is just random. Someone does a sale, and that triggers a whole series of events,” he said.

Bob Harrell, president of consulting firm Harrell Associates in New York, says air fares follow the laws of supply and demand, and that consumers can rarely know what demand will be. The sites “address an issue that is quite vexing to travelers: Book now or book later?” he said.

Most people have heard of pawn shops, but many have ideas and images that are, shall we say, less than accurate on just what a pawn shop is and what they offer. The short definition – they offer a short term loan based on the collateral that you pledge. No credit check, no waiting for approval by the loan officer, just fast cash. Of course, they also charge interest on the loans. When you have a loan to buy your home, you pledge the home as collateral in the event that you don’t, or can’t, pay back the loan. If you don’t pay your loan back, your home becomes the property of the bank. The pawn shops operate in much the same fashion. You bring in an item to pledge for a loan, you leave the item, and they give you cash and a receipt to bring back. In Nevada, the term of the loan is 120 days. You can pay the interest at this time and they will give you a “new” loan, again good for another 120 days. Most people do pick up their collateral and repay the loan, but when they do not, the shops in turn sell the items to recover their investment. This is where you can get some great deals on almost anything you can imagine.

Shopping at pawn shops and getting deals is now becoming mainstream with people ranging from top celebrities to CEOs shopping in them. The owners know you expect a deal as soon as you walk in the store, so they are prepared to bargain on prices. They can only hold so much inventory before running out of space, so they really want to make the sale to cover their losses on a defaulted loan. You definitely have the advantage when negotiating on something.

Hollywood has long portrayed pawn shops as being dark, sleazy operations, just full of stolen property and shady characters. Nothing could be further from the truth! They are in fact, a combination ‘Lending Institution’ much the same as your bank, and discount retail/jewelry/tool store, only with the best prices in town. The stores are clean and well maintained, with large and varied inventories. They all are required to work very closely with law enforcement at all levels to ensure that the material that they take in is legally owned and offered. Some of their best customers are these very same law enforcement officials.

One of the best pawn shops is the Gold and Silver pawn shop. The Gold and Silver Pawn Shop sells everything under the sun. From KitchenAids, to tools, electronics, antiques, and welders. They are a family based businessand have been satisfying customers for over 20 years.

It is definitely worth a visit to them. You can also view some of their items for sale on eBay. The items on eBay are what they could not sell in the store.

The Gold and Silver Pawn shop has more than twice as much jewelry as you would see in a regular jewelry.

Another popular pawn shop in Vegas is EZ Pawn.

EZ Pawn
808 Las Vegas Blvd S
Las Vegas, NV 89101-6723

They are actually a chain with many store locations across the U.S. You will find a huge selection of items.

A central focal point is a recreation of century-old Banyan trees native to Waikiki Beach that stretch toward an overhead canopy. Floors in the center’s central court have a wave-like, shimmering pattern made of crushed blue glass and mother-of-pearl. Other native island elements abound. An official statue of King Kamehameha, only the second one outside of Hawaii officially sanctioned by The Royal Order of King Kamehameha, adds an iconic presence. The center includes tropical plants unusual for Las Vegas, including rare palms, bromeliads and hibiscus, as well as various types of bamboo.
• Now for the entertainment. Team Aloha, a Las Vegas based troupe of island-born-and-raised performers, entertain you with dancing, storytelling and craft-making. Tahitian dance as well as both forms of hula, ancient and modern, are performed. Setting the scene ablaze are Samoan fire-knife dancers, dressed as “warriors,” who rapidly juggle and twirl flaming knives. Adding spectacle is a suspended group of oversized animatronic birds. Following a show of thunder and lightning, the birds become animated, singing, dancing and telling Hawaiian folklore tales.
• And don’t worry, there’s plenty of great places to eat and buy stuff. In fact, there’s even a wedding chapel in the Marketplace. You really have to put this on your “must-see” list next time you’re in town

The Fountains of Bellagio are sited in an eight-acre lake located in front of the Bellagio Hotel. The idea and character for the fountain were conceived by Mr. Steve Wynn, Chairman of Mirage Resorts, who commissioned WET Design to realize his objectives for the fountain’s site.

The Project took form in the summer of 1995, when Mr. Wynn, together with Mark Fuller and Claire Kahn of WET Design, determined the feature’s essential character. Among the Project’s objectives was the concept of creating a work that would be vibrantly kinetic and elating
for visitors, while expressing the romantic spirit of Bellagio.

The result of the collaboration between Mr. Wynn and the WET Design team is the most ambitious water feature ever conceived in terms of choreographic complexity and scale.

Located within the lake and spanning its 1,000 foot length is an array of over 1,000 water expressions and over 4,000 individually programmed white lights. Within this plan is a combination of water forms that enables the fountains to interpret and perform to selected musical pieces. Some of the movement is continuous, responding to the smooth, legato passages of music, while other water jets are rapidly pulsing and staccato. The simplicity of the layout of water elements and the variety of vertical water expressions available in the fountain allow for breadth and variety in the fountain’s kinetics.

A range of musical works was chosen by Mr.Wynn for the fountain’s shows, from classical and operatic pieces to popular music and songs from Broadway shows. In addition, Mr. Wynn and WET invited designers, musicians and performance artists to choreograph the fountain to the different musical selections. The result is a rich and dynamic collection of performances in water, each unique and expressive of its own musical character and the artist who created it. The performances range from delicate and whimsical to grand and commanding.

Visitors to Bellagio will be welcomed with an experience in water performance like none other. One that will lift their spirits and leave them with a feeling of elation and joy.

Experience the most ambitious, commanding water feature ever conceived! Bellagio’s world-famous fountains will speak to your heart with opera, classical and whimsical music while flirting with your playful nature through their carefully choreographed movements. You’ll be swept away by this breathtaking union of water, music and light.
